Google Maps Data Consumption: Causes and Fixes
You land in Rome, rent a car, and open Google Maps to find your hotel. Thirty minutes into your drive, you receive a text message from AT&T. You just triggered a $15 daily roaming pass. Your map app drained your data in the background, and now you pay the price.
Why Does This Issue Occur?
Google Maps relies on a constant stream of information to keep your route accurate. The GPS signal itself does not cost you any mobile data. The data drain comes from downloading the map visuals and live updates.
Basic driving directions use very little data. A standard map view consumes about 3 to 5 MB per hour. This low usage happens because standard maps use simple vector graphics.
The problem starts when you change your settings or drive into new territory. If you turn on the satellite view, Google Maps downloads heavy image files. A one-hour driving session with satellite imagery can consume up to 200 MB of data.
Live traffic updates, route recalculations, and searching for nearby restaurants also add to your total consumption. If you travel outside your home country without a dedicated data plan, these small updates trigger massive roaming charges.
If you notice other apps draining your allowance at the same time, read our guide on data apps abroad.
Quick Fix (Solves 80% of Cases)
You can stop Google Maps from using your mobile data entirely. The most effective method is downloading offline maps. This drops your data usage to zero while keeping full turn-by-turn directions active.
Do this while connected to hotel Wi-Fi:
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap your profile picture in the top right corner.
- Select "Offline maps".
- Tap "Select your own map".
- Pinch and zoom to frame your destination area.
- Tap "Download".
Once downloaded, Google Maps will use this stored file for directions instead of pulling new data from the cell tower.
Next, turn off the data-heavy layers. Open the main map screen. Tap the "Layers" icon in the top right corner (it looks like two stacked squares). Select "Default" instead of "Satellite". This prevents the app from downloading high-resolution images of the terrain.

Advanced Solutions
Sometimes, offline maps are not enough. Your phone might still allow the app to refresh in the background. You need to restrict its network access.
Restrict Background Data on iOS:
- Open Settings.
- Tap "Cellular".
- Scroll down the list of apps until you find Google Maps.
- Toggle the switch to the off position.
This forces the app to only work when you are on Wi-Fi.
Restrict Background Data on Android:
- Open Settings.
- Tap "Apps" or "Apps & notifications".
- Select Google Maps.
- Tap "Mobile data & Wi-Fi".
- Turn off "Background data".
You can also enable "Wi-Fi only" mode directly inside the Google Maps app. Tap your profile picture, go to Settings, and toggle "Wi-Fi only" on.
If your phone struggles to connect to the network entirely, the app might drain your battery and data trying to establish a weak connection. If your screen shows a SIM error, check no sim available. If you suspect physical damage to your card, read damaged sim card.
Travelers using digital SIMs might face setup errors that block data access. If you get an error code during manual setup, see sm-dp+ address.
Prevention
Relying on offline maps is restrictive. You lose live traffic updates, speed trap alerts, and the ability to search for new places on the go. Paying your home carrier for daily roaming passes is a waste of money.
| Carrier | Roaming Plan | Estimated Price |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T | International Day Pass | ~$15/day |
| T-Mobile | International Pass | ~$15/day |
| Verizon | TravelPass | ~$15/day |
| GoMoWorld eSIM | 15 days, 10GB | €10.99 |
A GoMoWorld eSIM fixes this problem upfront. You get a local data connection without the roaming fees. GoMoWorld is a data-only service. You keep your home physical SIM active for standard calls and texts, and you use the eSIM data for maps, browsing, and whatsapp while traveling.
Installation happens 100% via the GoMoWorld app. There is no QR code to scan. You download the app, select your destination, and install the eSIM directly on your device.
You control your spending. GoMoWorld operates on a prepay system. There are no overage fees and no surprise bills. Packages offer fixed durations and prices: €3.99 for 7 days (3GB), €10.99 for 15 days (10GB), and €19.99 for 30 days (25GB).
Your plan never expires until you activate it. You can buy your data package weeks before your trip. When you arrive at your destination, you simply open the app and tap "Start". There is no auto-activation. You decide exactly when your 15 days begin.
Every GoMoWorld plan includes hotspot functionality. You can share your connection with your travel partner or your tablet.

FAQ
Does Google Maps consume a lot of data?
In standard view, Google Maps uses a minimal amount of data, roughly 3 to 5 MB per hour. However, a one-hour session can consume up to 200 MB if you use the satellite view layer. Downloading offline maps helps reduce this consumption to zero.
Does GPS navigation use my data plan?
The GPS signal connects directly to satellites and does not use mobile data. Your data plan is only used to download the map graphics, calculate routes, and fetch live traffic updates.
How long does 1 GB of data last for Google Maps?
In standard navigation mode, 1 GB of data allows for over 200 hours of driving. If you turn on satellite view and constantly search for new locations, 1 GB might only last 5 to 10 hours.
How to use Google Maps without data?
Open the Google Maps app and tap your profile picture. Select "Offline maps" and download the area you plan to visit while connected to Wi-Fi. You can then get turn-by-turn directions in that area without using mobile data.
