You buy a local SIM card abroad, insert it into your phone, and get zero data. Your signal bars are full, but the internet fails. You need to configure your APN settings to get back online.

What Is an APN and Why Configure It?

Access Point Name (APN) is the exact gateway between your phone and the mobile internet. Your carrier reads this setting to assign you an IP address and route your data securely. Without the correct APN, your phone connects to the cell tower but cannot access 4G or 5G data.

You face this issue immediately when switching carriers abroad. You pop in a physical SIM or install a new profile. The phone fails to update the network gateway automatically. You are left completely disconnected.

Traditional carriers charge heavy fees for international data. AT&T and Verizon charge up to $15 per day for roaming outside the US. You try to avoid this massive bill by buying a local SIM card. Then you hit the APN wall and cannot load a map or translation app.

You must understand how to fix APN settings manually. A misconfigured phone leaves you stranded. Here is the exact process to restore your connection.

Traveler configuring smartphone APN settings during a trip.

Finding the APN menu depends entirely on your operating system. Apple and Android place these settings in completely different submenus. Manufacturers like Samsung also change the standard Android layout.

iOS APN Settings Path

Apple hides the APN menu deep in the cellular settings. Follow these exact steps on your iPhone or cellular iPad:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data in Europe).
  3. Select your active SIM or eSIM profile under the SIMs section.
  4. Tap Cellular Data Network.
  5. You will see blank fields for Cellular Data, LTE Setup, and Personal Hotspot.

Tap the APN field to edit it. Type the exact word provided by your carrier. Leave the Username and Password fields blank unless your carrier specifies otherwise. Go back one screen to save the settings automatically.

Android APN Settings Path (Google Pixel & Motorola)

Stock Android keeps the menu path straightforward. Follow these steps for Pixel or Motorola devices:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Network & internet.
  3. Tap SIMs and select your active network profile.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and tap Access Point Names.
  5. Tap the + icon in the top right corner to add a new APN.

Samsung APN Settings Path

Samsung phones use their own interface design. The path differs slightly from stock Android.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Connections.
  3. Tap Mobile networks.
  4. Tap Access Point Names.
  5. Tap Add in the top right corner.

Sometimes the issue is not the APN at all. A broken physical SIM card acts the exact same way. If your phone drops the SIM entirely, read about carte sim physique panne: causes and fixes.

Understanding the APN Fields Dictionary

Android presents a long list of blank fields. You only need to fill out a few specific lines. Entering data into the wrong field breaks the connection.

  • Name: A label for you. Call it anything you want.
  • APN: The exact gateway name from your carrier. This is mandatory.
  • Proxy & Port: Leave blank.
  • Username & Password: Leave blank.
  • MMSC: Multimedia Messaging Service Center. Required only for picture messages.
  • MMS Proxy & MMS Port: Used alongside MMSC for picture messages.
  • MCC & MNC: Mobile Country Code and Mobile Network Code. Do not change these. They auto-populate based on your SIM card.
  • Authentication Type: Select PAP or CHAP if your carrier requires it. Otherwise, leave blank.
  • APN Type: Type default, supl. If you want to use a hotspot, type default, supl, dun.
  • APN Protocol: Select IPv4/IPv6.

Tap the three dots in the top right corner. Tap Save. Select the radio button next to your new APN to activate it.

GoMoWorld APN Settings (and Other Carriers)

Typing APN settings manually wastes time. One missing letter breaks the entire setup. Autocorrect often adds a hidden space after the APN name, causing the connection to fail entirely.

GoMoWorld eliminates this manual entry. GoMoWorld is a data-only eSIM service. You install the eSIM 100% via the GoMoWorld app on iOS or Android. We use no QR codes. You never have to scan a screen or print a paper code. The app handles the technical configuration in the background.

When you buy a GoMoWorld plan, it never expires until you activate it. You can buy a plan today and travel next year. You activate it manually by tapping "Start" in the app when you land. There is no auto-activation. You control exactly when your plan begins.

Once you tap "Start", the app sets the correct APN automatically. You connect to the local 4G or 5G network instantly. GoMoWorld uses a strict prepay system. You face no overage fees and no surprise bills.

Our pricing structure offers 3 fixed durations everywhere:

  • 7 days for €3.99
  • 15 days for €10.99
  • 30 days for €19.99

The data volume varies by destination. You always know exactly what you pay. GoMoWorld is data-only. You get no calls and no SMS. You keep your home line active for those functions.

Every GoMoWorld plan includes hotspot capabilities. You can share your data with your laptop or travel partner without editing complex tethering APNs.

Manual Entry for Local Carriers

If you buy a local physical SIM, you must configure the APN yourself. The carrier prints the APN details on the cardboard SIM packaging. Look for a small section labeled "Internet Settings" or "Data Configuration".

You only get data with these local SIMs once the APN is saved. If you need to fix app-specific data issues abroad after saving your APN, review applications etranger data: causes and fixes.

Common Issues After Configuration

Relaxed traveler sharing mobile connection without stress in a cafe.

You typed the APN perfectly. You hit save. You still have no internet. Try these exact steps to force the connection.

1. Toggle Airplane Mode

Swipe down to open your quick settings. Tap the airplane icon. Wait 30 seconds. Turn it off. This forces your phone to disconnect from the cell tower and reconnect using the new APN gateway.

2. Enable Data Roaming

Go to Settings > Cellular > Roaming. Turn the toggle on. Many travel eSIMs and local SIMs require roaming to be active to route data correctly. Without this toggle, the APN cannot send data.

3. Check for Hidden Typos

Go back into the APN menu. Check for extra spaces. Autocorrect often adds a space after the APN name. Delete the space and save again. Ensure you typed lowercase letters if the carrier specified lowercase.

If your iPhone drops the network entirely and displays an emergency warning, read iphone shows sos abroad: causes and fixes.

Why Your APN Settings Might Be Locked

Your APN settings might be grayed out. You cannot tap them. You cannot add a new one. This happens when your phone is locked to your home carrier. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon lock phones purchased on installment plans. A locked phone rejects foreign SIM cards and blocks APN edits.

You must contact your home carrier to unlock the device. They will only do this if the device is fully paid off.

On iOS, a hidden configuration profile can also block APN edits. Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. If you see an old carrier profile listed there, tap it and delete it. Restart your iPhone. The APN menu will reappear.

Reset Network Settings

If the APN menu is accessible but data still fails, wipe your network settings completely.

  • iOS: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  • Android: Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.

This deletes saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings. It also resets the cellular gateway to factory defaults. After the reset, re-enter the APN manually.

To prevent this problem for good, a GoMoWorld eSIM solves it upfront: you keep your home number for calls and texts, with a dedicated data plan. eSIM →

FAQ

How do I configure my APN?

Open your phone settings and navigate to the cellular or mobile network menu. Find the Access Point Names section. Tap add, type the exact APN name provided by your carrier, and save the profile. Select the new profile to activate your data connection.

How do I find my APN number on my phone?

On Android, go to Settings, tap Network & internet, select your SIM, and tap Access Point Names. On an iPhone, go to Settings, tap Cellular, select your network profile, and tap Cellular Data Network. The active APN name will be displayed in the text fields.

Is APN specific to my carrier?

Yes. Every mobile carrier uses a unique Access Point Name to route data securely. If you change your SIM card or install a new eSIM, you must use the specific APN assigned by that new carrier to access the internet.

What is 4G LTE APN?

A 4G LTE APN is the specific network gateway configuration required to access high-speed 4G data. Without it, your phone might connect to slower 3G networks or fail to connect to the mobile internet entirely.
